Interesting facts about lions:There are 6x different types of lions: Katanga lion (south-west African lion) Transvaal lion (south-eastern lion) Barbary lion (Atlas lion) East African lion (Nubian lion) Asiatic lion (Indian lion) West African lion White lions are not albino lions. White colouration in white lions is like blue eyes in humans, which is also due to recessive gene. Another name for a white lion is “spirit bear”. There are currently less than 13 white lions living in the wild. The main threats to African lions are human – wildlife conflict, poaching for the illegal wildlife trade, natural prey decline, as well as habitat loss and climate change. Yet few realize that these big cats have undergone a catastrophic range deduction of 95 percent, from an estimation of 200,000 lions in the wild to a shocking total of 23,000 African lions left in the wild, they’re now officially classified as “vulnerable”. Every year an estimated 600 lions are slaughtered for sport.
